Tips for Ensuring Efficiency in a Cold Storage Facility

While we have discussed the subject of efficiency and expenditure within a cold storage facility in the past, in truth we barely scratched the surface. These facilities are highly specialised and as such even seemingly small actions and factors can have a substantial effect on the efficiency of the operation. By following the advice given here and in our previous article on the topic, it is possible to dramatically improve upon this, reducing both your carbon footprint and monetary expenditure in the process. So without further ado, let’s get started.

Building Condition

It’s somewhat pointless expending vast amounts of energy to cool the air within a cold storage facility if the roof and/or walls of the buildings are littered with faults and cracks which will allow this freshly cooled air to simply escape. Not only is the stable internal temperature of the facility likely to be compromised, this will also put extra strain on the condenser units as they fight to maintain a sufficiently cold environment.

Doors & Seals

Similarly to the previous point, flawed or damaged seals and doors will lead to the loss of cold air and ultimately force the condenser units to work harder as a result. As such, regularly checking the conditions of any seals within the facility is of vital importance.

When it comes to doors and access points, unless of course there are signs of visible damage which will affect the performance of the facility, the type of door is often the greater consideration. There are many options when it comes to door types within such facilities, which we previously outlined here. Internal Temperature Monitoring

Without regular monitoring of the internal temperature of your facility, you may be left completely unaware of any issues affecting the operational efficiency of the facility. Cold storage facilities are rendered somewhat redundant is they are unable to maintain a constant temperature, so you will want to keep a close eye on this and act immediately upon any substantial variations or clearly visible issues.

Condenser Units & Evaporator Coils

While they are of course entirely separate components, the same issues can affect both the condenser units and evaporator coils upon which cold storage warehouses rely upon to operate. A build-up of dust, dirt and debris can compromise the efficiency of these crucial pieces of equipment, and as such regular maintenance and cleaning is highly important.

Lighting Solutions

While the previous points above have focused more on maintaining temperature in order to improve efficiency, lighting does come into play as some solutions can be a massive contributor to energy consumption. Floodlights are likely the most commonly used lighting solution in a cold storage facility, but they really do use a lot of power for the task; instead, opt for LED lighting which can reduce the energy demand of lighting systems by nearly 75%.
