Hinckley Schoolboy Completes Charity Snowdon Climb

Back at the start of June, we wrote about eight-year-old Joshua Yates, who was planning to climb Snowdon in support of the dog charity Paws2Rescue. At the time of writing he’d reached 80% of his £500 goal through donations and was two and a half months away from completing the 1000m climb up the Welsh mountain.

Last Friday, Joshua completed that climb with a total of £600 raised by the public.

It’s a sensational achievement, especially given his young age, and the money will be going specifically towards the treatment and rehabilitation of a Romanian dog named Mikey. The dog was saved by the Paws2Rescue charity after being injured in a car accident and left for dead, and has since been taken in by a permanent family. Thanks to the money raised through Joshua’s YouCaring page, Mikey has had the opportunity to be seen by the Supervet and receive treatment for his broken front leg.

The weather was better than expected last Friday, although the rain did start to fall just after the climb was completed. Despite the dry weather, some thermal gear was still necessary thanks to the wind chill up on the summit, where the cloud cover was hanging low. In terms of temperature, the average hovered around the low-10s (°C) on that day, with wind speed picking up around the low-20s (mph). Padded raincoats, woolly hats and fleece jumpers were the necessary attire for the trip up and down Snowdon, though the brief glimpses of sunlight offered some respite from the cold.

Joshua’s charitable work for Paws2Rescue is likely to continue in the future, with donations still open on his YouCaring page to help out with Mikey’s rehabilitation. To keep track of the dog’s progress, you can check out his Facebook page which has been updated regularly with news and pictures following his surgery.
