NewCold Advanced Cold Logistics Expand into Australia with Two New Facilities

Back towards the end of February, we reported on how Netherlands-based cold store providers NewCold were investing a hefty $50million into a new automated facility in the US, and it seems their expansion is far from over. The company are now headed to Australia, with plans to open two new cold store warehouse facilities in the suburb of Truganina, located approximately 22km (14mi) west of Melbourne’s central business district.

Of the two new sites, the first will handle frozen goods for McCain Foods Australia, a new client for NewCold, as well as Peters Ice Cream, which is part of the Froneri Group. The construction of the facility is being handled by automated supply chain technology provider Dematic, and will include an integrated system which combines an automated pallet-handling system with in-house warehouse control software developed by NewCold. It is hoped that this integrated technology will help the facility to run at peak efficiency, and NewCold certainly have a history of success in such matters.

“The storage and handling of McCain’s frozen products in the new automated facility will give us a more stable temperature regime and highly accurate stock control,” said McCain Foods ANZ supply chain director Taso Kourou.

As for the second facility, this will house chilled and ambient products for dairy company Fonterra Australia, which is currently undergoing the process of consolidating its existing distribution network and six warehouses into one central facility. Built to hold up to 110,000 pallets, the new 12-storey facility is due to open in July.

NewCold already has an impressive track record with such facilities, with the company already handling major automated cold store projects throughout Europe and, as mentioned previously, the US. This latest venture into Australia cements NewCold’s position as a truly global company, and I would only expect further expansion in the future.
