Koenigsegg Agera RS – The Perfect Winter Car?

When you think of cars perfectly suited to winter driving, you tend to angle more towards heavier, more rugged options with big fuel tanks, plenty of torque and enough space to carry all the supplies you’ll need if you find yourself in the middle of a raging blizzard with no mobile signal.

What you certainly wouldn’t consider would be a mid-engined, hyper-fast, low riding supercar, and yet Christian Koenigseqq has claimed that the Agera RS – the latest in his eponymous line of insane roadsters – is the ‘perfect winter car’.

This statement was made after, on a voyage to the Geneva Motor Show, a convoy of sports cars had to deal with some fairly adverse weather conditions. Many cars, of all of them fitted with winter tires, struggled to negotiate the icy roads, but the RS allegedly ploughed on, largely unperturbed.

According to Koenigsegg, this is firstly because the winter tyres chosen for that particular car were ideally matched to the car’s weight, but also because supercars have a very low centre of gravity, excellent traction and in the RS’s case, front and rear lift systems, which allays some of the issues other similar cars might have with ground clearance.

Now, I’m not going to suggest that anyone goes out and buys a $2 million supercar just to deal with bad winter roads, but when you watch the RS negotiating the snowy mountain roads effortlessly (as in the above video), you can understand where Koenigsegg is coming from.

Understanding how winter tyres function, and how to pick out the ideal set for the car you drive is very important for driving in low temperature conditions. The other important thing is getting to know the strengths and weaknesses of your vehicle in those conditions. The RS, for example, is very good at dealing with ice and snow on the road, even on a gradient, but if you did get stuck in a storm, there isn’t much storage space to keep a survival kit handy.

Front wheel drive cars can struggle with hillclimbs on ice, whilst rear wheel drive cars are more likely to lose traction on a bend and spin out. If you learn more about your car, you can learn the best way of handling it if the situation does arise. The Koenigsegg owners of the world can rest easy knowing that a drive through the alps is possible, but then if they can afford a car like that I imagine they can rest easy about most things, really.
