Counterplas’ ‘Loft Stilt’ Insulation Tool Shortlisted for European Award

The EPRO Best Recycled Product Awards, a competition held each year by the European Association of Plastics Recycling & Recovery Organisations with the aim of rewarding those companies which ‘demonstrate their commitment and work in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility’, has announced its shortlists for the 2017 awards in this year’s two categories – ‘Product’ and ’Design’.

One entry in the product category is of particular interest to us here at Keep Me Warm - the ‘Loft Stilt’ from UK-based technical injection moulding company Counterplas.

The 'Loft Stilt' from Counterplas
The simple yet innovative product, constructed from 100% recycled plastic, has environmental credentials that go well beyond its own manufacturing process. The product, resembling something between a giant clothes peg and Goliath’s golf tee, is designed to raise the floor height of a loft space to achieve a maximum insulation thickness of 270mm where it would have previously been impossible or extortionately expensive to do so. Due to the way in which the stilts are installed, this is achieved with minimal loss to usable loft space.

With the UK’s fuel poverty crisis continuing to escalate, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Consumer response seems to agree with me there as, according to Counterplas, ‘thousands’ of individual stilts are sold in the UK each week through major DIY retailers. The company attributes their ‘resounding success’ primarily to the product’s green credentials; the same quality that put them on EPRO’s radar.

Counterplas are in fact the only UK-based company to be shortlisted for either category. The full shortlist of finalists is as follows:

Product Category -
  • Counterplas (UK) - with the Loft stilt
  • INCOPLAS sa/nv (Belgium) - with the EUR range of bottles made from HDPE circular compounds
  • Papier-Mettler (Germany) - with reusable bags for life made from back-of-store waste
  • Roofeco System SL (Spain) - with an engineered modular roof tile system
  • SP-Berner (Spain) - with the ‘Venus’ outdoor furniture range
Design Category -
  • Mi-bin Ltd (Ireland) - with the ‘Mi-bin’ multifunctional intelligent bin
  • SP-Berner (Spain) – with the ‘Miami Set’ self-assembly outdoor furniture
Winners will be announced at the IdentiPlast 2017 conference, which will be held in Vienna, Austria on 22-23 February.

It seems that EPRO aren’t the only organisation to be impressed with Counterplas’ efforts; the company also picked up the award for Best Recycled Plastic Product of the Year 2016 at the Plastic Industry Awards on the 30th of September. Now, with critical and consumer acclaim in no short supply, Counterplas look set for massive success with their Loft Stilt product. Considering what we know about it, I can only see that as a good thing.
